The foothills reserves: 1,972 acres
Every one of Boise's 7 open-space reserves is rated full sun in the city's tree data, which is exactly why they are miserable in July and right in January: open ground takes what sun there is, and loses its ice before a shaded lawn does. These are walking and trail-running land, not playgrounds, and most have no restroom at all.
Paved ground: 11 greenbelt parks
When the lawns are mud, paved path is the difference between a walk and a change of clothes. These parks open straight onto the Boise River Greenbelt, which is paved the whole way and stays usable with a stroller or a balance bike.
